Language learning is about much more than memorising grammar rules. Here I share practical ideas, reflections, and advice to help learners build confidence and use English in the real world.

Don't get me wrong. Grammar is important. It helps us communicate clearly and accurately. However, it isn't the only thing English learners should focus on. Becoming a confident and competent English learner requires several aspects of language learning to work together. Grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, listening, and many others all have a role to play.
One area that is sometimes overlooked is vocabulary. In many situations, learners can communicate surprisingly well if they know the right words, even if their grammar isn't perfect. I often think about how children learn their first language. Before they master grammar, they learn to interact with the people around them. They build relationships, learn individual words, and gradually begin putting those words together into sentences. Their grammar develops over time, but communication starts much earlier.
For language learners, a wider range of vocabulary provides the building blocks for communication. If you know the words you need, you can often find a way to get your message across. However, vocabulary alone isn't enough.
Language is a two-way street. Every conversation involves someone producing language and someone interpreting it. This is where grammar becomes so valuable. Clear, accurate grammar makes your message easier for the other person to understand. It reduces misunderstandings and allows conversations to flow more naturally. In other words, vocabulary helps you say something, while grammar helps you say it clearly.
The danger comes when learners believe that grammar has to be perfect before they can speak or write. I've taught students who had become so worried about making mistakes that they avoid communicating altogether. One student in particular would answer every question with a single word because they didn't want to risk making a grammatical mistake by speaking in full sentences.
As teachers, this raises an important question: how can we help?
In my experience, the most effective approach is to create a classroom where students feel safe to make mistakes. Learning a language means experimenting, taking risks, and sometimes getting things wrong. Mistakes aren't signs of failure. They're a natural and essential part of the learning process.
Fortunately, this particular student began to see the classroom as a safe place to practise before using English in the real world. With encouragement, patience, and reassurance, they gradually became more willing to speak. As their confidence grew, so did their ability, and, before long, they were participating far more freely in, and out of, class.
Grammar matters. Vocabulary matters. Pronunciation, listening, and confidence matter too. The most successful language learners don't focus on just one of these aspect of language learning; they develop all of them together. Although preparing for exams is a bit different, communication in everyday English isn’t about being perfect. It's about connecting with other people and using the language as a tool to do so. The more opportunities learners have to communicate, make mistakes, and learn from them, the more confident and capable they become.
